PE
The intent, implementation and impact of our PE curriculum
Our Approach (Intent)
At Springfield Academy, we believe that physical education, experienced in a safe and supportive environment, is a unique and vital contributor to a pupil’s physical development and well-being. Our physical education curriculum is intended to provide for pupils’ increasing self-confidence in their ability to manage themselves and their bodies within a variety of movement situations.
Progressive learning objectives, combined with sympathetic and varied teaching approaches, endeavour to provide stimulating, enjoyable, satisfying and appropriately challenging learning experiences for all of our pupils. Through the selection of suitably differentiated and logically developed tasks, it is intended that our children, irrespective of their innate ability, will enjoy success and be motivated to further develop their individual potential.
Through lesson time, specialist coaching and our out of school sports activities, we support pupils in developing skillful use of the body, the ability to remember, repeat and refine actions and to perform them with increasing control, co-ordination, fluency.
Children are encouraged to describe and make simple judgements about their performance, and to use their observations and judgements to improve. We believe in the importance of drawing cross-curricular links, and to this end, pupils are taught about the effects of exercise on the body in Science as well as PE.
As a school, we want to promote enjoyment and enthusiasm for learning through our PE lessons and provide a curriculum that inspires all pupils to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physically demanding activities. The purpose is to not only provide opportunities for all pupils to become physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness, but to also take part in these activities in order to build character and help to embed our school values such as determination and respect. We want to teach children how to cooperate and collaborate with others as part of an effective team, understanding fairness and equity of play to embed life-long values.

Pre-Lockdown, and from September 2021:
- Take the Key Stage 2 children to the local swimming baths to receive swimming lessons by qualified swimming instructors;
- Take all children in Years 1-6 to receive 6 weeks of ice skating lessons at the National Ice Centre in Nottingham, where they receive certificate accreditation for their ability are the chance to win a scholarship available for identified talent.
